Google boasts that it has the most ‘hits’ of any website on the Internet, with billions of hits per day. While everyone is familiar with the deceptively simple search engine giant, there are many of us who don’t use its full capabilities.

In almost every search database there is a way to clarify and simplify a search in order to find precisely what a person is looking for. Additionally, since we as educators have to be more and more careful about what we expose our students to, it becomes much more important to censor out all the ‘bad stuff’ and focus in on what we need.

Below is a collection of Google words that, when used in the Google search bar at www.google.com, can narrow the search to only include information that is pertinent.

Word usage and their use in Google searches:

There have been a lot of fourth-grade teachers in New York State looking for a learning object that meets their core curriculum needs.

In response, we’ve created a New York State learning object — and, we’re offering this learning object free for a short time.

This learning object can be used to teach about:

Major Cities

Lake & Rivers

Explorers

Counties (can be toggled on and off)

Geographic Regions

Population Density Centers

Native American Tribal Regions, and

Relief Map

Along with having layers that can be turned on/off, several layers can be activated at the same time. This can help students match, lets say, population density centers with cities and/or with the relief map.

Click here to get this learning object while it is still available for free. Might we also suggest that, along with the New York State Learning Object, you could get the New York City Learning Object too?

We’d love to hear some feedback about this learning object, especially from those teachers who suggested it. They spoke, we listened.
