The SMART Board and Hebrew

We have received a number of inquiries from schools that use Hebrew in their lessons about how well the SMART Board and the SMART Notebook work with Hebrew. Here are a couple quick notes:

  1. You can screen capture Hebrew writing and it will appear exactly the same in the Notebook as the source, but you will not be able to edit it.
  2. If you copy and paste from a program such as Davka Writer, it will come up as nonsense symbols in Notebook. You can select the text, however, and change the font to a Hebrew font. You will need to have a Hebrew font as an option to do this.
  3. The flash tools in the Lesson Activity Toolkit that allow you to type information directly into them are not compatible with Hebrew. Ones that use images and Click-To-Reveal shapes will work.
  4. You can change the floating keyboard into a Hebrew keyboard. In Windows, go to the Control Panel, select Regional and Language, select Keyboards and Locations, and choose Hebrew. You may need the Windows CD to install Hebrew on the computer. Note: In the Notebook software, the Hebrew keyboard will type left to right in Notebook.

We found an excellent post on Avi Chai’s Educational Technology blog on this subject that has a number of resources for Hebrew teachers. Check it out.

We hope this helps all of the SMART Board users who have inquired on this subject. If you have questions about Hebrew, other foreign languages, or anything else, please post a Comment or email us at training@tequipment.com.

  1. Susan Schwartz Says:

Davka now sells Hebrew Unicode Fonts. When installed with Windows Hebrew support, these will let you type from right to left in Notebook software. They do not support nikud, however.
